I was hired at a Wal Mart store in ARizona 8 months ago. In that time, I became
amazed at the number of borderline and definitely illegal activities going on. I
have a friend who was being stalked who works at the same store. When she
tried to get help against the coworker who was stalking her, they put him in a
nearby area to work and wrote her up!!! I have a restraining order against my ex
because he bbasically tried to kill me, when I saw him at work one night (I work
overnights as a stocker), I was told by the managers that if I call the police, I will
get fired. "That's not Wal Mart's policy" It gets even worse.
When I first started
there, we had around 45 people working nights. Today, May 9, we have maybe
15!! People are leaving and our store manager refuses to replace them. I am
leaving this particular store next week and gave them 6 weeks' notice and no one
has been hired to replace me or been trained to replace me.
Also, because of the
increased departure of staff, there are a certain number of people, myself
included, who are being pulled from our departments and being expected to work
3 or more deaprtments every night. Now, there are associates who absolutely
refuse to leave their departments and so they get to work their areas and not help
out while the rest of us are busting our butts to try and help.
And nothing we do
is good enough. One colleague got written up because he worked 7 departments
in one night and sent back 1/2 a pallet he couldn't get to. There is another
worker who suffered a heart attack and the day he was back, they only allowed
him three weeks off, they sent him right back to water and sodas, one of the
hardest areas to work. I worked so hard that I ended up out for 10 days and the
day with severe flu and exhaustion. The week I get back I have to work 4 or
more dapartments. Then I get a verbal reprimand for stuff I did not do. The day
people do not work at our store. I come in to 6 baskets of items that have not
been put away and a department that has not beeen zoned. When the day
people got caught, they said I do it! So I was reprimanded. No one asked my
co-workers, no asked me, no one asked the night coaches, no one worked with
me to see. This happened the weeks I was out. And I have been yelled at for
mistakes that happen on my weekends! This is a problem throughout all the
areas. We come in and the day people are not working. Also, no one is in the
same library much less on the same page. We are told to do features and we
come in and days has ripped down the features. If we don't do features, the night
coaches will write us up; if we do put up features, our department managers will
write us up.
It is a no win situation.

Humiliating the Staff
My wife has worked for Wallyworld since 1998, first as an associate then as a
department manager for the last two years. She has a great work ethic and is a
kind and gentle person, probably too gentle. She helped set up three new stores as
they opened in our town because she likes the feeling of enterprise that goes with
opening a new store. She did fine at the first three locations, earning several merit
pins for good work, but her job has turned sour starting one year ago when she
moved to her present location.
Here, she received a coaching for her "mods" not being perfect last year. She was
being put under increasing pressure to meet new demands but was rarely given
help though she often asked for it. At the same time management started taking
away her riser space (above the retail shelf space), her bin space (in back) and she
had to share one of very few "telzons" (hand-held wireless computers) with other
departments. She was often pulled off her work to help other departments that
already had help; she was usually the only one in her own department.
Recently she was given another coaching and a D-day after working very hard trying to keep up
with the demands.
In the recent SWASS meeting, the store manager openly humiliated her in front of
her co-workers by reprimanding her for 11 misplaced or miscounted boxes of
shampoo in her mod. She tried to explain that in that department, there are
hundreds and hundreds of small items and that she made every effort to finish the
mod in the time allowed as she had numerous other duties and "special" projects
for other departments.
They are now in the process of demoting her to an associates position. Although
she feels poorly treated, she is going along with it because she may have less stress,
though lower pay. If management felt that my wife did not have certain attributes
demanded of managers (the other supercenter did not have a problem with her
work as dept. manager), they should have talked to her in private and explained
their position to her instead of reprimanding and humiliating her in front of the whole
In the summer of 2003 WAL*MART store #1087 had become a 24 hour store
and were accepting applications for overnight stockers. I applied and within days
contacted back to arrange for an interview. On the day of my interview I waited
for about 20 minutes before the manager finally met me. We met and he gave me a
psychological evaluation quiz. I thought to myself.. “ Ok…this is pretty standard
preliminary procedure…no big deal…I’ll take the quiz and be done with it.” So I
sit down take the test, read it thoroughly and answer it truthfully when I was done, I
waited another 20 minutes for the manager to come back. He finally got there and
took my evaluation and reviewed it quickly and then said… “ Ok follow me…” He
tool me upstairs and sat me down in a break room of some sort…and heres where
the weired part came in.. He began scrutinizing the answers I had given on the
exam…. “ On question number 13, you answered ‘Most Likely’….Now why
would you answer that way?…and on Number 32…you answered…
‘Hardly…sometimes Never’ …Why did you answer it like that? This kept going
until he had covered every question on the test. About halfway through the
interrogation he broke in a sweat and pulled out a handkerchief…he seemed to be
getting really worked up about this test. In the back of my mind I was thinking
about how odd this whole scenario really was. I was going to be a stocker…It
was a job I had done many times. I knew what the job entailed, I knew what third
shift was like. I knew that you didn’t need a college degree and I knew that many
retail businesses have a hard time keeping people working that shift for a long time.
I was ready to go that night if need be, but this guy insisted that I adhered to the
intricacies exam. It became so outrageous that I finally ended up calmly asking the
gentleman what type of answer would he prefer I give, since he wasn’t getting the
kind of answers he wanted. In the end we shook hands and he said he would call
back within a few weeks, I knew he wouldn’t, and he didn’t. I spent the remainder
of the day beating myself up over losing the job. “What did I do wrong?” “What
answer should I had given?” I admit that I am pretty much a yes man when it
comes to my work. Although I am in my 20’s,I have an old fashioned work ethic,
I don’t fool around on company time, I basically give my employer the respect they
are due when I am on the clock. I remember a time when people did business with
a handshake, now it is assumed that your personality and work ethic can be
anylyzed and accurately predicted by a machine and that is just so degrading. I
walked away from WAL*MART that day with a totally different perception than I
had walking in and I haven't shopped there since.
Wal-Mart's UnAmerican Burying of Shrade Knives
This is not a directly personal story, but I found out about this this weekend and have been fuming ever since.
Schrade, one of the oldest (if not THE oldest) United States knife making companies, has recently gone out of business. Do you want to know why?
Single-handedely, Schrade was put out of business by WAL-MART.
This information came second hand from a good friend of Joe Kious, the
well-known custom knife maker and artist. Kious designed a knife for Schrade a
few years ago that was released as a artist limited edition design.
According to Kious, who has kept in touch with many people in the Schrade "family," Wal-Mart came to them and said that they found a Chinese company who could provide them with knives for cheaper, and Schrade would either lower their
prices to meet the Chinese factory's price or they would lose their Wal-Mart contract.
Schrade had reached a point where around 80% of their stock was going to Wal-Mart stores. The knife company said that they could not keep their employees and maintain quality while simultaneously competing with the ridiculsously low Chinese bid. Wal-Mart then said fine, we'll go to the Chinese.
And this is exactly what they did.
So the beautiful Schrade knives that have been the mainstay of American quality knifemaking and have been carried by just about all our grandfathers and fathers,
the company who made knives that even after fifty years hold their edge and maintain their beauty as well as their utilitarianism -- are gone.
I have HAD it with the whole patriotic hypocrisy that Wal-Mart oozes from its corporate pores.
Wal-Mart has put mom and pop companies out of business all
over this country. They have destroyed American companies with an extremely long tradition in our country, one at a time. (Think of all the small town family-owned stores that are now gone because they could not compete with the
Wal-Mart that moved into your area. I'll bet every one of you can name at least four or five.) They wave the flag while simultaneously being THE largest importer
of Asian goods in the WORLD -- all at the cost of our nation. And we eat it up.
Please please please do NOT shop at Wal-Mart...
Intimidation, Stalking, The Usual at Wal-Mart
Written by michael of store 304 - cart pusher
Lowest of the Walmart Low was my last email that got posted on your site. Now i'm going to write another, mainly because things have not changed and I was Verbally Assaulted and Stalked by one of our managers. Here is the story:
I am a 498, also known as a cart pusher. As i said in my last email, we are treated like dirt. Anyways, we have one 498, Jimmy, that doesn't want to do anything and will sit on his butt or take 20minute+ bathroom breaks. This wal-Mart associate has even sunk so low as to leave wal-mart property twice without clocking out and he was never given a coaching or a tiny talking to. One of our managers told us 498's, me and daniel. We have also overheard Jimmy saying that he is not afraid to get fired because of one or main managers, Robert, is his next door neighbor and robert is his parents friend. He also said Robert gave him the job no questions asked...
We have another 498 named John that sits around all the time and will disapear for 20 minutes up to an hour at a given time. Complaints over this issue has not solved a thing. Jimmy and john still to this day do hardly nothing.
One Saturday it was Jimmy, John, Daniel, and I on the parking lot. Due to the fact it was the busiest day of the week we decided to split up sides. John and Jimmy wanted the easy side. We all agreed. An hour passed and we noticed them sitting down on the other side while carts were everywhere, even lined out into the road. So Daniel and I went to the Manager's Office and complained to Robert. We also asked him for help because the other two 498s were sitting down on the job and wasting company time. He said that he didn't believe us because other people say the same thing about us which was totally uncalled for because we had been working nonstop. So he said that he would review the video tapes from the cameras and see who was working and who was not. He also said we didn't need any help and he refused to give us the help we needed. 3 weeks later the issue has still not been resolved and Jimmy and John still get away with doing nothing while everyone else cleans us after them and carries their workload.
Last Thursday Jeremy mentioned an idea for everyone to call out the upcoming Saturday because we had worked all week while John and Jimmy did nothing. We were all terribly tired. So the plan was to call out and make john and jimmy work. Jeremey told Taiwan and I this and noone else. Taiwan walked away and was like "no way." and i was doubtful. I wasn't going to go through with it. On friday Daniel and I were left alone on the parking lot by ourselves for 4 hours with noone to cover while we were on breaks. We were promised help but we received none (we hardly ever do.) So safe to say when i woke up on Saturday morning i did not want to go to work. i was exhausted. So i called in at 6am. I was scheduled to come into work at 8am and John was scheduled to come in at 7am. I was told by another one of us 498s that at 7am john was seen driving around the parking lot in his truck...they soon found out that he wasn't coming into work that day. So on Sunday when i came in at 8am i was told about Saturday and how I called out, John Called out, Taiwan's mother was put into the hospital and he had to go, and that Jeremy called out as well. I was a bit shocked.
Monday was the big shocker and this is when the big hooplah began. I got a phone call from Jeremy as i was getting ready for work and he told me this, "When Robert asks you say it was Planned." I asked him why and he told me, "Because he asked me and i said yes because i had a feeling that he knew something and when i said yes he said 'Thanks because i'd of given you this' He shown me a pink slip" At the time i cringed cause i knew he'd ask me the same question. So i got ready for work and parked in my usual parking spot beside the store, not in the associate's parking lot. I clocked in and began working with Jeremy and he told me everything that was said. They had been interrogating Jeremy and John for the past 2 hours about it and John said things like: "I only sit down alot because when the afternoon guys get here i'm sooo tired." and "Jimmy told me that Michael and Jeremy and Taiwan were going to call in and so i called in." When i heard this i got ticked because i cannot stand john. Well anyway, 15 minutes later a CSM came outside and told me to go the manager's office. Jeremy wished me good luck.
I sat down in the manager's office and Robert walked in with my favorite manager named Hellen. Hellen likes me and I know she knows that i'm one of the hardest working 498s. Robert asks me, "I know you know why you're in here. So let's begin. Was it planned?" I looked at him and said, "Yes, it was mentioned. But i only called out because i was exhausted from the night before." Robert leaned back into his chair and gave me an angry stare. "Tired?? Tired?? How many hours do you work Michael? How man hours do you work??" Chris, another manager has walked in and is standing behind me. "I work a little over 30 hours a week i think," i said. "Chris! How many hours do you work?" "A little over 50 he said." "See you michael, Chris works more hours than you do and he doesn't call out! You have no reason to be tired!!"
I was really shocked that he was saying this because in our handbook a written coaching is when a manager tells you what you have done wrong and tells you ways to improve. They do not drill you. Well anyway, the interrogation continued.
"Tell me Michael! Tell me! Why should i not fire you right now?? Why should i not fire you right here right now? Why should i not fire you? Tell me. Give me an answer." I said, "Because i am a hard worker..." "Wrong! You're not a hard worker. A hard worker wouldnt' call out on our busiest day of the week to let others carry your workload.YOu are not a hard worker. A hard worker shows accountability and responsibility and you have shown me none!"
At this moment i am looking at Hellen and she is looking away and fidgeting. Chris is standing behind robert leaning on a table with his arm crossed looking at robert with a confused look. robert continued..
"Alright then, that answer didn't work now did it? Give me another." Robert then begin slapping the corner of a piece of notebook paper that's on the corner of his desk.
At this time my hands are shaking and my nose begins to run out of nervousness.I stay silent and look at Hellen because everything is going through my head so fast. She just looks at me with a sad look.
Robert then says, "See you don't have a reason. That's why i'm giving you a dday. I"m goign to pay you and you're going to go home and since i'm paying you, you're going to use this night to right me a very meety paragraph as to why we shouldnt' fire you. And if you decide not to well.. YOu call in again and it's not excused, you're fired. You come in late again...you're fired."
Now i go to sit at the computer to write my comments or whatever. I can barely type because of my shaking hands. I then look up at robert and ask "What should i type?" "Michael, are you sorry about what you did and how you've disapointed Wal-Mart??" I just nodded my head up and down. robert then said, "GOOD! that would be a good start don't you think??" I sat there for 30 seconds trying to get my thoughts straight and Robert says, "Ya know, Let's just save his for tomorrow. It better have some meat to it when you come back!" He then clapped his hands together one time. I stood up and left. i clocked out and angrilly walked out the front doors. Trying to hold back the tears (and rarely do i cry.) I walked to Jeremy who is getting carts up at row 6 so i could tel him the scoop. Jeremy then called Daniel over to join us. I told them what happend and then told them what really made me angry: "He asked me why he shouldn't fire me and I told him I was a hard worker. He said i wasn't cause i disapointed walmart and called out blah blah blah blah..." I then notice jeremey and daniel staring behind me looking dumfounded. I turn aroudn and robert's car is parked right behind me...robert is looking at me. "They can't help you michael...you need to leave now." At thist time i am shocked and bewildered because the only way he could of been that fast is if he had ran to his car and followed me onto the parking lot. "See you later guys! I'm outta here!" i yelled. Then i hear robert say, "Come with me jeremey, we need to walk around and talk." Jeremey says ok. I storm off to my car. I hop in and pull out and i see staring right at me is Robert in his car. He followed me again...I sped off the lot and left.
I came home and had to tell me mom what had happened. I broke down in tears. I am 19 years old...
Robert's coaching was highly intimidating and the after coaching stalking didn't help either. I almost had a nervous breakdown. I looked in the Handbook and it said that Intimidation and Stalking is Workplace Violence and will involve Termination and jailtime. I am calling home office and sending a copy of this email to the Department of Ethics. And if that dont' work I'm going to file a lawsuit and i ask of you guys to help. I will also report the understaffing to the Department of Labor. =)
Thanks for reading, Sincerely

My Mom Is Being Worked To Death
my mom works 80 to 90 hrs a week, she is told daily that her job is at stake if one thing is forgotten, she does not get a lunch, or even breaks. her district manager goes around bragging that they had the pay for new assistances cut, it’s a proud moment, they make less then minimum wage when you figure out the hrs in comparison to the wage. no wonder they take out an insurance policy on there associates, they work them to death, they die and the big profitable company gets richer while we lose those we love and charish. my father and I are trying to get her to look for another job, and hes going with her to help her job hunt next week. I hope the big wigs read this, there killing good people, family orientated my ass, my moms district manager feels that you shoul live and breath wal-mart forsaking your family, if that’s family I say no thanks, and hopefully soon so will my mom, because wal-mart we are still young and we need her, you just want to run her into the ground then disguard her like trash. I hope this gets printed, because maybe if people realize that its not just the regular associates who get jerked around but the assistance as well. thank you hopefully wal-mart free very soon.

Hello all. I know that we've all
about sexual discrimination lately, and
surprised because walmart sucks, but
ready for the
shocker? How about sexual
discrimination against men?
I am a man employed at one of the
stores in the States. I've only been at
this store a
few months after transferring from
another, and that
is more than enough for me. Had to take
healthy two dollar/hour pay cut to get
here too. Now
I cannot afford to support my family's
I've had to find other work to
There are only 2 men in management,

manager on our
management team's totem pole) and the
department manager. Both of which have

When the two girls that are Support

just not smart,
my assist says things to me like "Why
did you let them
do that? You're the man!" And she's
that's what they get when they promote a
Support. That's right, they promoted a
Support Manager, gave her keys to the
store, and has
it ever gone to her head. Now she
ridicules and mocks
the guys old and young that are employed
whenever she can.
It being a small store, I've had the
work with everyone here. What it boils
down to is
that better qualified men, myself NOT
included as I've
only been here a few months, have been
passed over for
promotion. When I've talked to the

degree and go into the First in Line
program they just laughed.
I've worked for Wal-Mart in 3

Fired But No One Knew
I have been employed by Walmart
since Autumn of 2002. In March of 2003
I found out I was terminated from my job
only after I tried to use my employee
When I was told I was terminated it
was by the attending cashier who was
quite surprised that no one from the
management team spoke to me. I was
told to talk to a member of management
immediately. I did try that night to
speak to the shift-assistant manager but
he would not talk to me about the
"situation" and that I had to speak to
someone the next morning.
I did go to speak to another member
of management the next day and he
referred me to my handling assistant
manager who I had never met. She did
me that I was terminated because of
labour cut-backs and I would have known
that I was terminated by the time clock.
She did apologized that the time clock
was on the blink for the past two weeks
and I would have known earlier.
While I did get paid for the two
weeks I did work while I was
"terminated", no one below the manager
and my handling-assistant manager knew.
evern my department manager.
What makes this matter even worse
is that I was still on the work
schedule for three more weeks with my
department depending on my working my
an already poorly covered schedule.
Why is it the nit-wits are running
The only good thing that has
happened is that after the general
was terminated himself for more that
this infraction I was rehired, but only
after a 90 day period.

Damn Near Almost Killed By Walmart
I live in North Bay, Ontario and I recently purchase a bicycle from our local Wal Mart. There were a few minor problems with it, but nothing I couldn't fix myself except for the fact that the gears were not working properly. I then returned the bike and exchanged it for a different one. We had to try four different ones until we found one that the gears functioned properly. However the very first day of riding this second bike, the bolt on the back tire let go while I was crossing a major highway. Because of this I almost fell under the car that was beside me. I brought the bike back in and demanded my money back, I also asked to put in a formal complaint (which I did to the store manager). It has been three weeks and I have not heard anything in return.
Your Photos Will Be Ready in About... NEVER
I took film to the Walmart store in Lewisville , Texas. This film was valued to my family because of the birthday pictures we would treasure . The Photo manager was rude and refused to take responsibility for anything when the film was lost. The film was to be ready in one hour . I shopped and returned in one hour and the person that was on duty then because the manager left said the film would not be ready until the next day at 10:00AM . I said no problem . I will come back then and get the pictures .
The next day I returned and the same people were not working that day.
They could not find the film or pictures or anything. They said that it was my fault for not coming back in time the night before.
I went to the store manager who was also a moron and was put on the defensive by his hardnosed anti-customer service attitude.
The bottom-line is I returned the $ 250.00 worth of merchandise I had bought the night before to another Walmart. I will not buy anything from Sams or Walmart in the future and I will strongly recommend that everyone who has a conscience and a will to do the right thing stay away from this form of dictatorship in business.
Wal-Mart Robs From Poor Employees To Give to The Poorer
I worked at store #3637, I want all Canada and U.S.A. to know that when a store is being set up you work as a slave and are charged if you step on the rug, lean on shelves, swear, chew gum, don't smile, are late, etc. When you get caught they fine you and send all the money to charity.... Then they put a big ad in the paper saying Walmart donated all this money to charity....
All the charity money they give is from employees........I wonder if this is legal, as they get the tax receipts, not the poor employee.........I am not printing my name as the manager at this store is vindictive and I live in fear of my family if he finds out I wrote this.

Wal-Mart Profits From Employee Death
My husband of 27 years was a Wal-Mart assistant mgr. for l0 years. The last 4 years of his life he was working 75-80 hr weeks not the 52hrs he was hired at. Wal-Mart had started seriously short staffing their stores and the workload became horrible. The last 3 days of Mike's life I didn't see him as he had worked close to 48 hrs . On Sept. l999 Mike called 3 times for assistance with a large tv for a lady customer, no one was available to help. Mike took the tv out and loaded it by himself. He got 20 feet back inside the store where he had a massive heart attack from over exertion. Mike was only 48 and had passed a physical and stress test just 5 months earlier. I took Wal-Mart to court under NH workman's comp laws and won showing his death was work related. Last spring my attorneys told me that WAl-Mart had a secret life insurance policy on my husband with Hartford Ins. in the amount of $300,000 which they had collected on shortly after my husband died. In l993-94 Wal-Mart took out 350,000 secret life insurance policies on low level employees who also had their health insurance with them. They called these policies dead peasant policies or dead janitor policies. When an employee died WAl-Mart collected, not the families. I was shocked and outraged. My husband never knew Wal-Mart had a large insurance policy on him. If he had known he would have been so scared. He would have said they hope to kill a few of us off and profit from it. This is immoral and wrong. The # l Fortune 500 company had to help get there by profiting from the deaths of some of their employees. Sam Walton would be so ashamed of what happened to his company. My husband was a wonderful man, a king, not a peasant. Just the words dead peasant and dead janitor tells you what Wal-Mart thinks of their low level employees. The American public is becoming aware that Wal-Mart has a dark side, a very dark side, which is fueled by their greed and wanting control of the retail world. If you know of WAl-mart employees who died from l993-Jan. 2000 their families should contact the union to see if there is a classaction suit in their state on the dead peasant insurance policies. There are families out there who lost loved ones and Wal-Mart made money on it. I am now the lead plantiff in a NH classaction suit against WAl-Mart and the life insurance companies involved. My sons and I are upset and feel betrayed by WAlmart. Please let Wal-Mart know that it is wrong to put secret life insurance policies on employees and profit from deaths. Thank you
